National Anti-Boredom Month: Six Series to Binge With Your Dad When You Can’t Go Outside

National Anti-Boredom Month was established in the 1980s. It falls after family Independence Day celebrations lead to long months without any holidays to celebrate together. While you don’t need a holiday to gather, work schedules and school activities can make it hard for families to get together.

Summer skies in a lot of the U.S. have been experiencing a lot of smoke from Canadian wildfires. Because your dad has heart disease, he’s not supposed to spend time outside, even if it’s sunny. He’s getting bored, and that makes National Anti-Boredom Month very fitting.

Keep him occupied this month by watching these six series together. They’ll have him hooked and wanting to keep watching.

Doc Martin

This British medical drama takes place in a quiet coastal town. Doc Martin left his London career after developing a phobia of blood. He runs the family practice in town, but the friendly locals struggle with his blunt ways. Enjoy all 10 seasons and the final documentary that celebrates the series’ end.

Sherlock

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman star in this multi-season series about Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. It’s an award-winning series that features modern-day takes on the men and the crimes they solve. With four seasons to watch, you’ll have plenty to keep you entertained.

Call the Midwife

In Call the Midwife, the drama features a group of midwives in the 1950s who help impoverished women in East London through their pregnancies and births. It’s based on a midwife’s memoirs of helping women in that time period. You have 12 seasons to catch up on.

The Great British Baking Show

If your dad likes to cook, this show is a lot of fun. A group of novice bakers competes in challenges to see which baker is the best in Britain. There are several seasons you can watch. Earlier seasons with Paul Hollywood and Dame Mary Berry are among the best of the 13 seasons so far.

Happy Valley

Does your dad like crime dramas? Happy Valley can be intense, but it’s won multiple awards for a very good reason. James Norton plays the ultimate villain and will have you wanting to see Sergeant Catherine Cawood getting him back behind bars. Enjoy all three seasons.

The Crown

This long-running series looks at Britain’s Royal Family, starting with a young Queen Elizabeth and moving forward through major family highlights, such as the wedding between Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer. It’s won many awards and is worth a closer look.
